According to the International Tire and Rubber Association, the trucking industry saves $2 billion each year using retread tires. The Tire Retread Information Bureau documented over 18.5 million retreaded tires were sold in North America in 2006. The majority of these were medium truck tires.

Retread Tires Are Good For the Environment

It takes about 22 gallons of oil to produce one truck tire and just 7 gallons to retread the same tire. This means 15 gallons of oil are saved each time a truck tire is recycled and retreaded. According to the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB), retreading conserves approximately 400 million gallons of oil annually in the United States and Canada.

It may be possible to retread your tires more than once depending on the tire condition and how much damage it accumulated. According to TRIB, steel radial truck tires used in long haul, high speed operations can usually be retreaded two or three times. Tires used in local service operations where they wear quickly, like on garbage haulers, may be eligible for retreading five or more times depending on their condition.
